THE GLASS MENAGERIE

THE GLASS MENAGERIE

OCTOBER 17 – 26

Written from a memory by Tennessee Williams

THE GLASS MENAGERIE is a memory play by Tennessee Williams that premiered in 1944 and catapulted Williams from obscurity to fame. Narrated and partially re-enacted by Tom Wingfield, the story revolves around the lives of Tom, his histrionic mother Amanda, and his mentally fragile sister Laura. The family grapples with the challenges of daily life in St. Louis during the 1930s aftermath of the Great Depression, particularly Amanda’s desperate attempts to secure a suitor for the painfully shy and physically disabled Laura.  Considered a classic of American theater, THE GLASS MENAGERIE is admired for its innovative use of symbolism and its timeless portrayal of family dynamics.
